William Henry Gardner, Jr.

William Henry "Nick" Gardner, Jr. passed away Sunday in Duke Hospital. He was born in Edenton, NC on neember 26, 1925. Nick graduated from John A. Holmes High School, where he played several sports and was an Eagle Scout. Nick attended NC State for one year and then traneerred to Duke Uneersity's School of Engineering where he earned his BSCE and Phi Beta Kappa in 1945. After a year of active duty in the U.S. Navy 35th Construction Battalioneea Bees, he returned to Duke Engineering School as an instructor of civil engineering. He then earned a Masters degree in civil engineering at Yale Uneersity in 1948. Nick returned to Duke as an Associate Professor of civil aneenvironmental engineering. He left Duke in 1963 to form an engineering consulting firm in Durham which eventually became Gardner & McDaniel, P.A. Nick's career spanned over 50 years. He served as the engineer-of-record on over 1300 building projects totaling $1.5 billion for many of North Carolina's uneersities, school systems, corporations, military bases, and medical facilities. At Duke, he led the engineering design work for the Bryan Uneersity Center, the Nello Teer Engineering Library Building, the Duke Center for Living and neerous buildings at Duke Medical Center. Nick was instrumental in the creation of the NC building code in the 1960's and served as Chairman of the NC Building Code Council for many years. Surviving are his wife, Mary Louise Powe Gardner; his children, Mark Gardner and wife, Dona Reed of Friday Harbor, WA, Alston Gardner and wife, Barbara Lee of Aspen, CO and Lucy Gardner Stokes and her husband, Bill of Durham; his grandchildren, Megan and Ben Gardner, Emma and Anna Gardner, Amy Ward, and Will aneemily Stokes. Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Thursday from St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Robert Kaynor officiating. Private cremation will follow the funeral. Friends may visit 6-8 PM Wednesday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Donations in Nick's memory may be made to: the W. H.
