William A. Smith, 83, died Monday, February 26, at the VA Medical Center. A Durham native, William was born on May 2, 1923, to the late Luther aneella Hall Smith.
In 1943, William joined the Uneed States Marine Corps, serving in the 22nd Marine Regiment, 1st Brigade. He had an extensive wartime record, including battles at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Kwajalein Atoll, Eneetok, Parry Island and Guam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for his injuries.
After serving his country, William returned to Durham and was employed at Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company from 1945 to 1965. He also was a self employed contractor until his death. William enjoyed gardening, raising cows and chickens and will be fondly remembered for his deep love of family. William was proud of his service to his country and of his associates at the VA Hospital. William was baptized at Blacknall Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Rose Seagroves Smith of Durham; his children, Judy Seeley and husband, Daniel, of Nashville, TN, Lineey Smith and wife, Jan, of Hillsborough; and Lori Fields and husband, David, of Hillsborough; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; siblings, Ella Mae Smith Yoks, Sherrill Junie Smith, Dorothy Smith and Troy Williamson, Maxine S. Turner, all of Durham, and Clinton James Smith of Greensboro. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary Ida Smith.
A memorial service will be held 2 PM Thursday, March 1, from Grey Stone Baptist Church with the Rev. Clay Waters officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor.
