(Chapel Hill) – Virginia Ruth Steinmetz, age 88, died at home on November 19, 2024. She was born on October 15, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois to the late Harry Verploegh and Ruth Wetherell Verploegh.
Virginia was a graduate of Wheaton College. She received her Masters degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, and her PhD in English from Duke University. She taught at Meredith College in Raleigh for 8 years, and then spent the rest of her career (25 years) as the Director of Graduate Career Services at Duke University until she retired at the age of 75. She was active in Christ United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school classes.
Virginia is survived by her brother Case Verploegh, daughter, Claire Steinmetz Stuebe, her son, Matthew Eliot Steinmetz, her daughter-in-law, Jane Helen Vaughan, grandkids, Carl Forest Stuebe, Gillian Grace Stuebe and husband Ricardo Chable, and her great-grandson, Santos Chable, and other extended family. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Ruth Verploegh, and her husband, David C. Steinmetz.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 26, 2025 at Christ United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Amnesty International.
