Timothy Rhodes Schner

December 11, 1962 — August 1, 2022

 (Durham, NC) Timothy Rhodes Schner (Tim), died at home in

hospice August 1, 2022. He was born on December 11, 1962, in


Oceanside, New York to Susan and Douglas Schner.


Tim grew up in Manchester, Vermont where he learned to play the


bass guitar and was soon playing regularly in bands heavily


influenced by the music of the Grateful Dead. By age 13 he was


playing paid gigs with his first band Peyote Ridge and quickly


became a fixture in the burgeoning Vermont music scene. Tim


continued to play bass for the next 20 years in bands such as Stronger


than Dirt, James & the Generics, Bad Weather and Oblique Wave


which was frequently double billed with Phish.


Tim was an accomplished luthier having graduated from Charles Fox


Luthier School located in Southern Vermont. He continued his career


as a luthier working for Time Guitars in South Burlington where he


learned the art of finishing and painting guitars. Tim was also a 1993


graduate of Johnson State College (now northern Vermont


University). Whilst attending Johnson State College, he discovered a


love of theatre, performing in plays and learning stagecraft, a career


he utilized for the rest of his life.


After relocating to Durham, NC in 1993 he continued to work in


theatre and participated in the re-opening of The Carolina Theater in


Downtown Durham. Over the years Tim worked many of the area


theatres and most recently at The Durham Preforming Arts Center


where he loved being a follow-spot operator for Broadway shows.


Tim was a proud union member of The International Alliance of


Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 417 since 1998.


In 1996 Tim married Amy O’Donnell and they continued their shared


love of theatre, the arts, science fiction, cooking and of course music.


Tim is survived by his wife Amy, mother Susan, brother Jonathan,


sisters Rebecca, Abigail and 13 nieces and nephews.. Tim was


predeceased by his father Doug in 2015 and his mother-in-law June


O’Donnell in 2022.


A gathering to celebrate his life will be held at Hall-Wynne Funeral


Home in Durham on Monday, August 8 from 6-8pm.
