Thomas William Hawk

September 30, 1942 — September 22, 2023

Thomas William Hawk, born on September 30, 1942, in Avis, Pennsylvania, was the beloved son of the late Paul William Hawk and Helen Rebecca Glossner. He was the eldest of five boys and one girl. Tom's journey through life was one marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for his family and country.

Tom's educational journey began at Immaculate Conception High School, where he graduated in 1960. He then pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Teaching from Lock Haven University and later obtaining a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University. His love of learning was evident throughout his life. Tom's passion for flying led him to a distinguished career in the United States Air Force, where he served for 22 years. During his service, he displayed tremendous courage and heroism, particularly during his deployment in the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1972. Tom's bravery earned him medals and recognition, and on Memorial Day, we remember his dedication to his country.

After retiring from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel, Tom and his wife, Barbara, settled in Fairborn, Ohio, where they raised their

children. Tom continued to pursue his love for aviation, becoming a pilot for US Air. In 1997 he completed his final flight and hung up his wings pin, marking the end of a remarkable aviation career. He then found joy in a new venture as a bus driver for the local elementary school, where he earned the respect and admiration of the "trouble kids" through his unique approach to discipline.

Tom is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Barbara Woodward Hawk, his daughter, Joanne Hawk Atapour, his son Gregory Thomas Hawk, his stepchildren Julie Moore Slocum and Jeffrey Paul Moore, and his cherished grandchildren: Avery Hawk, Emerson Hawk, Ashley Slocum, Cole Slocum, Matthew Moore, Grace Moore, William Moore, and James Moore. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Paul William Hawk and Helen Hawk, and his brother John Hawk. Tom's warm and friendly demeanor made him a fan favorite with strangers, and he had a gift for striking up conversations wherever he went. Barbara often had to patiently wait as he shared stories with people he met along the way, a testament to his outgoing personality and the connections he formed with others.

A funeral mass to celebrate Tom's life will be held on Friday, October 27, at 2:30 pm at the St. John Fisher Chapel on the campus of St. Thomas More parish in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association

The Hawk family is grateful for the love and support they have received during this time. Online Condolences can be shared at www.hallwynne.com

Tom will be dearly missed, but his legacy of service, love, and the countless stories he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
