Thelma Williams Garrett, 91, died Sunday in Clare Bridge of Chapel Hill. She was borneeptember 16, 1919 in Chatham County, the daughter of the late Carl and Lizzie Williams. Thelma was educated in Durham County schools, where she graduated in 1936 from Hope Valley School as the class salutatorian and a member of the basketball team. After high school, she attended business college in Durham, where she studied accounting. Thelma retired after many years of service at the Uneersity of North Carolineextension Division. A woman of deep Christian faith, Thelma was a lifelong member of Yates Baptist Church. Thelma Garrett had a full and productive life. She was an accomplished artist and cook, a world traveler and a loyal friend. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. Thelma is survived by her brother, Clyde J. Williams and wife, Jean, of Durham; son, Ted Garrett and wife Jo Ann, of Charlotte; daughter, Diane McGuffey, of Durham; son Richard Garrett, of Hillsville , Va.; seven grandchildren, Bart Garrett, Clarky Sonnenfeld, Michael McGuffey, Dan McGuffey, Karen Elliot, Camille Flaherty, Will Garrett, aneeight great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Wilson P. Garrett. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Thursday in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, with the Rev. John Frederick officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Friends will be received in the funeral home on Thursday one hour prior to services.
