Susan Ray Leggette

October 2, 1961 — January 8, 2025

The family of Susan Ray Leggette of Durham, North Carolina, is deeply saddened to announce her passing on January 8, 2025 at the age of 63.

She received compassionate care for many years at DaVita West Durham for dialysis. Her final days were spent with close family, friends, caring professionals at UNC Memorial Hospital and lastly under the exemplary care of Duke Hospice at Hock Family Pavilion.

She was born on October 2,1961 to the late, James Alonza Leggette, Jr., and Mary Anderson Leggette.

To know Susan was to love her.

She was truly a unique, clever, intelligent, caring woman who lived without judgment or critique of others.

Her life was shaped by difficult events and circumstances leading to mental health challenges and later physical ones, but this didn't alter her core spirit and her true nature. She never saw the worst in people, probably to a fault, but that's where her beauty came from. She accepted others as they were, never met a stranger and would ask a myriad of gentle, innocent questions and actually cared about the answers. She gave away possessions without hesitation, stems of flowers from her arrangements for example, anything really. She was an artist and a poet with a unique style that conveyed beauty and stirred emotion. In recent years she enjoyed filling in pictures from coloring books and distributed these sweet works with great enthusiasm to the lucky recipients.

She loved Jesus, cats, cows, the American flag, and those who served our country, but especially her friends and family. She was a world class hugger and a bit of a trickster at heart. Susan had subtle wisdom and her blue eyes sometimes sparkled with a peaceful knowingness that can't be captured with words.

She was our daughter, sister, auntie and friend and we are deeply grateful for the time we had with her.

Susan is survived by her mother, Mary Anderson Leggette, her brother, Jim Leggette (Michelle), her sister, Rosemary O'Briant (Billy) and her nephew, Slade O'Briant (Shimena).

Susan was preceded in death by her father, James A. Leggette, Jr.

The Leggette Family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service and the loving, spiritual care of Trinity United Methodist Church.

The Service of Death and Resurrection will be Sunday, January 19 at 2:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church. 215 North Church St., Durham, N.C. 27701
