Socratis Gerondelis

April 2, 1941 — May 2, 2021

Socratis Gerondelis died on Sunday, May the 2nd of 2021 at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. He was 80.

Born in Ampeliko, Greece, he trained as a musician and tailor. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 16 and lived in Plainfield, New Jersey where he supported his mother, sister and younger brother.

Socratis married Aliki Stylianou in 1968 and lived in Highland Park, NJ where they raised their two sons Peter and Eustathios. As members of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church of Piscataway, NJ, Socratis was a member of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) and volunteered as chaperone for various Greek Orthodox Youth Association events. He was a freemason with Union Lodge #19 in North Brunswick, NJ where he served as Worshipful Master.

After raising their sons, they moved to Jamesburg, NJ before eventually retiring to Durham, North Carolina to enjoy their grandchildren. At Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church of Durham, NC, Socratis continued with the AHEPA where he served as Director and provided musical entertainment at various church events by sharing his extensive music collection as a disc jockey as well as by live performances with his bouzouki.

Socratis is survived by his wife Aliki; sons, Peter and Eustathios; three grandchildren, Alexander, Katherine and James and by one brother, Peter Gerondelis.

Socratis was predeceased by his parents Eustathios and Athanasia (Meligonitis) Gerondelis; his brothers Nicholas Gerondelis and Stilianos Gerondelis and his sisters Efstratia Calantjis and Mary Barnard.

Visitation will be between 6:00 and 8:00 PM at Hall-Wynne 113 W. Main Street, Durham, NC 27701 along with Trisagion Prayer Service at 7:00 PM.

Funeral Services will begin at 10:30 AM at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church 8306 NC HWY 751, Durham, NC 27713 followed by the interment at Maplewood Cemetery 1621 Duke University Road, Durham, NC 27701.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Socratis Gerondelis to Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, Durham, NC 27713.
