Simon Barnes

March 17, 1924 — July 9, 2016

Simon Strother Barnes, age 92, died peacefully Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Duke Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. Born in Wilson County on March 17, 1924, Simon was the son of the late Leslie Norman aneeva Love Strother Barnes. A graduate of Durham High School, Simon proudly served his country during WW II and the Korean War while in the U.S. Navy. He was employed with Southern Railroad, the Hosiery Mill, Carolina Distributing Co. and was office maneer for Dennis Equipment. Revered by everyone who had the pleasure of being in his company, Simon will be remembered for his warm smile and friendly laugh. He was happiest and most content when swinging in his backyard with his faithful friend, King VI. He will be forever missed. Simon is survived by his devoted and loving sons, Stokes Barnes and his wife, Tammy; and John Barnes, both of Durham, NC; his grandson, Brian Taylor Barnes and wife, Amy, of Bolivia, NC; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Charles and JoAnn Stokes and their children, Mac and Sharon; Calvin and Ann Stokes and their children, Susan, David and Jessica all of Greenville, NC; his nephew, Calvin Laneey of Troutman, NC and sister-in-law, Judy Barnes of Chiefland, FL and her childreneeva and Buddy. He was preceded ineeath by his wife, Christine Lucretia Stokes; and his two brothers, Carlton and Leslie Barnes. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2016 from Grey Stone Church with Dr. Clay Waters presiding. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. On Saturday from 3:30-5:00 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service all firefighters, EMT and police are invited to visit with the family. From 5:00-7:00 p.m. friends of the family are invited to visit with them. Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson Association of the Carolinas, 1515 Mockingbird Lane, Suite 1055, Charlotte, NC 28209; or to the Alzheimer???s Association of North Carolina, 3739 National Dr., Raleigh, NC 27612.
