Sheila Ann (Faucette) Storey, 77, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2021, in Durham. She was born on December 31, 1943, to Billie Forsythe Faucette and Agnes (Perry) Faucette in Durham. She was raised in the Bull City until the untimely death of her mother in 1956, after which she was looked after by several loving aunts and uncles. She graduated from Durham High School in 1962 and briefly attended Campbell College before marrying James R. ("Jim") Storey, also of Durham, in 1965.
Jim and Sheila immediately set off for life in the US Army, which included postings at Ft. Bragg, NC, Ft. McClellan, AL, and Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. Jim resigned his commission in 1974, and the couple resettled in their native Durham with their two sons, James Jr and Alexander.
Sheila took a job in personnel administration at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute in 1979, beginning a long career with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that included the UNC Dental School’s Craniofacial Clinic and the UNC Medical School’s Medical Science Teaching Laboratory. Her work was so valued, she came out of a brief retirement to assist UNC Geriatrics.
Outside of work, Sheila enjoyed gardening, flower arranging, travel, and crafts. She was particularly active in the Catholic Church. An adult convert to the faith, Sheila was a long-time parishioner of Holy Infant in Durham, where she taught Sunday School. She later joined Immaculate Conception in Durham in 1993 where she connected with the Catholic Daughters of the Americas’ Court Durham. Sheila held various positions in Court Durham before becoming Court Regent. She later rose through the state ranks, becoming State Regent and most recently served two terms as National Director. In addition, Sheila participated in several local and national fundraisers and led conflict resolution workshops with CDA courts in other states.
She will be remembered for her generous spirit and her deep loyalty to family, friends, and her faith.
Sheila was preceded in death by Jim, her husband of 53 years, in 2018.
Sheila is survived by James R. Storey, Jr. of Durham and Alexander J. Storey, and his wife, Melanie of Arlington, VA; and step-grandson, Ben Corrigan.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered 11:00AM, Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at Immaculate Conception Church in Durham with Fr. Gonzalo presiding. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.
Memorial donations may be made to the Durham Rescue Mission and the V Foundation for Cancer Research.
