Sally Mcwhorter Spears

Sara Lucile McWhorter Spears Sally left this earth unexpectedly from home of natural causes Monday, December 6 to joineer Lord and Savior and loved ones. Sally will be lovingly remembered for her deep faith, devotion to family and friends, as well as her charismatic and nurturing nature. She had a servant's heart and a radiant spirit. Born June 13, 1929 in Fairmont, WV to Beatrice and L. E. McWhorter, she entered Duke Uneersity in 1946 where she met and fell in love with Marshall Turner Spears, Jr. They married on August, 25, 1949. At Duke she was a uneersity marshal, member of Kappa Alpha Theta, and made a lifelong dear friend ineer roommate, Madge Slaughter Vaughan. Sally committed herself to neerous civic aneeducational organizations in Durham. Among those were as a founding member of the House and Garden Club, serving on the board of the Junior League of Durham, chairing an adult reading program, representative for Camp Yonahlossee, Chair of the Durham AFS chapter, serving on the Durham Academy Board and as Chair of the Durham County Library Board. She was also a member of Duke Memorial Uneed Methodist Church and a frequent attenee of Duke Chapel. A supporter of Duke Uneersity of 61 years, she was an Avid Blue Devil Fan for all sports, but particularly Basketball. Sally lived young! In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, her brother, Robert D. McWhorter and niece, Karen McWhorter Price. Surviving are her daughters, Linda S. Grignolo and husband, Alberto of Wellesley, MA and Susan S. Nunn and husband, Dan of Charlotte. Sally, known affectioneely as Mae Mae left her cherished grandchildren, Daniel McPherson Nunn and wife, Meredith of Raleigh; David Marshall Nunn and Michael McWhorter Nunn, both of Charlotte; Maria Haynes Grignolo of Boston and Leslie Grignolo Koster and husband, Rorik of Raleigh; a niece, Susan McWhorter Peterson and a nephew, Robert Bruce McWhorter. A memorial service thanking God for her earthly years and celebrating her eternal life will be held 2:00 PM Friday at Duke Memorial Uneed Methodist Church with the Rev. Ginger Thomas and the Rev. Dr. Craven Williams officiating. Sally will be buried at a private family service Friday morning in Maplewood Cemetery. Her grandsons and sons-in-law will be pallbearers. Friends may visit Thursday 4-7 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
