Rubyleigh Davis Herndon (July 2, 1918 ??? neember 30, 2016) Rubyleigh Davis Herndon died peacefully on neember 30, 2016, oneer family farm in Durham County. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Jacksoneerndon, and is survived by her son, Fred Herndon, daughters Nancy Herndon, Constance Herndon, and Faith Herndon, and her 5 grandchildren. Born in Fremont, NC, Rubyleigh received her B.A. from Greensboro College (now UNC-Greensboro) and her M.A. in history from UNC-Chapel Hill. She worked as a teacher in eastern NC and in Chapel Hill-area public schools before her marriage. As a member of Watts Street Baptist Church in Durham, Rubyleigh was a founder and the first chairperson of the church???s Peace and Reconciliation Committee. In that role and for many years, she worked for peace and justice both locally and worldwide. In the 1980s she was part of a local delegation that visited the Uneed Nations to support Nuclear Disarmament Day. She traveled to the Soviet Union (before President Reagan did) with the Russian-American Friendship Society, a citizen-to-citizen effort to promote peace and trust. Rubyleigh is loved and remembered by her family and members of the community for her kineess, generosity, sharp intellect, and strong moral compass, which influenced and guided all who knew her. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Watts Street Baptist Church at 2:00 pm. There will be a reception following the service.
