Robert Edward Moore

January 13, 1950 — December 2, 2024

Durham

Robert (Bob) E. Moore (74) passed peacefully into the eternal arms of God’s love on December 2, 2024. For over two years Bob lived with pancreatic cancer, enduring treatments that helped him have a fulfilling end of life.

A native of Mobile, Alabama, Bob was passionate about the history through which he lived as a young adult. Much of his story is preserved for his family in videos which he recorded after his diagnosis.

Bob was a proud graduate of Rice University and Duke University, earning Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees in Philosophy. He was fond of explaining his thesis: Do you raise your arm, or does your arm rise?

Bob loved all sports, but especially football and baseball. It’s a true blessing he was able to see his Astros win a World Series in 2022. Bob also loved philosophical conversations, jigsaw puzzles, infrastructure, and sharing process improvements. In October 2019, he realized a lifelong dream of taking a cruise through the Panama Canal. (Mary Jane also went, but less enthusiastically.) He was a unique man whose gifts can never be replaced.

Bob is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Jane, a true partner in all areas of life. Their son John (Christa) of Framingham, MA and daughter Anne of Durham will mourn the loss of their dad. Bob’s grandchildren, Samuel and Lucia, will miss snuggling, watching football, and reading books with their Papa. Bob and Mary Jane always parented a cat or two (or three), and their current cats Dani and Max will miss the warm lap to nap in.

Bob has been a pillar of leadership at his beloved St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Durham since 1983. He served in almost every volunteer leadership capacity. He will be deeply missed by his church family, particularly his supper group and EfM family. For many years, Bob volunteered at the Holy Cross Anglican School in San Pedro, Belize. This was a huge part of his ministry. He and Mary Jane sponsored their dear Arianie’s education from childhood through college.

A service celebrating Bob’s life will be on Saturday, December 7 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Church, 1737 Hillandale Road, Durham, NC 27705.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke’s Church attn Holy Cross Anglican School, or Belize College Scholarships through Est/Her.
