DURHAM ??? Richard D. Sloan, 75, of Durham died Wednesday, neember 19, 2014. A native of New York, Richard was the son of the late Paul Sloan and Mary Cain Sloan. He enlisted in the US Navy at age 17, serving for seveneears, earning two good conduct medals and an armed forces expeditionary medal. Uponeeaving the Navy, Richard went to work for IBM in Kingston, NY where he worked in hardware and helped pioneer the once-popular token ring networking. His career brought him to North Carolina where he worked as a software engineer, later retiring after 35 years. He continued working after retirement for 8 years as a contractor with CTG as a support specialist, providing assistance to customers using the very products he once helped create. After his second retirement, Richard and his wife Terry enjoyed traveling, visiting maneeuropean countries as well as South Africa, and went oneeveral cruises including a Baltic cruise that stopped in 15 countries. While at home he enjoyed spending time with his family, his cat, working on his computer, bird watching, and an occasional round of golf. His sharp mind and quick wit gave him an appreciation for even the most subtle humor; a combination that kept everyone with whom he engaged in conversation on their toes. Richard is survived by his wife of 35 years, Anne (Terry) Sloan; two daughters, Vicki LaPeruta and husband, Richard; Kimberly Dachenhaufen and husband, Dale; two sons, Jerry Sloan; Paul Sloan and wife, Mia; one step-daughter, Patricia Kirlauski and husband Michael; one step-son, John Hoffmann and wife, Elizabeth; a brother, Charles Sloan; grandchildren, Tami Samantha, Amanda, Adrian, Ashley, Amber, Alexa, Joseph, Miranda, James, Charles and April; step-grandchildren, Michael, Jenneer, Joseph, Melissa and William, aneeight great-grandchildren. He was preceded ineeath by his brother, John Sloan. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11:00am Tuesday, neember 25, 2014 at Holy Infant Catholic Church with Fr. David Devlin, OSFS officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Chapel Hill Cemetery. Friends may visit from 6:00 ??? 8:00pm Monday, neember 24, 2014 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
