Reverend John Sprole Lyons Ii

Reverend John Sprole Lyons II, 69, passed away February 23, 2010 in Durham, NC. Born in Atlanta, GA on March 27, 1940, he was the son of the late William Wallace Lyons and Alice Whipple Lyons. Sprole, as he was known to family and friends, graduated from North Fulton High; attended Georgia Tech; and graduated from Georgia State College in 1966. Sprole married the late Florence Darnell Lyons oneecember 21, 1968 and graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary ineecatur, GA in 1970. Sprole worked for a brief time as a radio announcer in Carrollton, GA before serving Presbyterian churches in Darien, GA; Johnson City, TN; Princeton, KY; Whiteville, NC; and Parkersburg, WV. More recently, he lived in Atlanta and then spent the last 7 years in Durham, NC, near his daughter. He frequently attended First Presbyterian Church in Durham. He served many positions at the Presbytery and Synod levels. Following the examples of his unee and grandfather, both were need J. Sprole Lyons. He also served in a variety of community activities, and had a passion for photography and cameras, old and new. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Alicia Lyons of Durham; son, Jonathan Sprole Lyons of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Sarah Lyons; brother, Bill Lyons, both of Atlanta; and two grandchildren, Kathryn Bryn Lyons and Audrey Claire Lyons. A memorial service will be offered 2:00 PM on March 27, 2010 from First Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA Memorial contributions may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 3101 Industrial Drive, Suite 210, Raleigh, NC 27609, in loving memory of his wife, Florence Lyons.
