Durham, NC

Raymond Theodore Bohn, III “Trey” February 16th 1951- July 15th, 2024

Trey passed away unexpectedly following a brief illness on July 15, 2024.

In the days leading up to his death he was surrounded by his entire family until his last breath. They held him close and lifted him in prayer. He was 73 years old.

Trey was the most loving son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend. Born in Charlottesville, Virginia to Raymond Theodore Bohn Jr. and Thelma Weaver Bohn, Trey was the oldest of three siblings. He was energetic, innovative, well mannered and had a magnetic personality that helped him make friends easily. He was always happy.

He lived most of his childhood in Flemington, NJ. Growing up he played the trumpet and became an Eagle Scout at the age of 17. During his summers he enjoyed time in the outdoors at their family cottage where he had fun canoeing, camping, exploring and fishing. He often attended the National Boy Scout Jamboree.

He graduated high school from Blair Academy in 1969 where he was captain of the golf team & also on the wrestling team. He continued golfing in college as captain of the team at Franklin & Marshall where he also was a Chi Phi fraternity member and “social chairman.” He was a graduate of the class of ‘73 and earned his degree in History.

After college, Trey lived his life to the absolute fullest. He dedicated his time to family, friends and a successful five decade long career in the food industry. In his free time you could find him golfing, cooking, traveling, going to concerts and spending time with his brother & sister at Smith Mountain Lake. As a testament to his character and love of family he moved to Winchester, VA in 2004 to support his dad who was battling a stage 4 cancer diagnosis. Trey was by his side constantly and during this time he also worked for a local seafood distributor. There he learned the logistics of the seafood business. When he returned to Durham in 2006, he started his own business, Simply Fresh, and supplied restaurants in the Triangle with high quality seafood and unparalleled customer service. Trey always went out of his way for his employees and customers.

He was the best dad to his daughters, Blair and Ashley. Whether taking them to lunch, calling them often, or making sure to schedule the annual beach trip, his unwavering love and attention to his girls was always a priority. Trey met and married the love of his life, Jean in 2011. They were perfect for each other as Jean also put family first. They were a blessing to one another and their personalities were a wonderful match. They shared a love of entertaining friends and family. Constantly on the go, they filled their time with lots of travel and fun.

Trey was known as “Poppy” to all four of his grandchildren and never missed the opportunity to be at a sporting event, recital, birthday party or school event. He taught them to swim, golf and cook. Their time spent with him was invaluable. He extended this same attention to his grandkids by marriage and also to all of his nieces and nephews. His heart was so big and generous and proud of any and all of the kids accomplishments.

Trey was a member of Aldersgate Methodist Church when he lived in Durham, NC and later in his life a member at St. Andrews Presbyterian in Raleigh. Although he was quiet about his faith, it wasn’t hard to tell that he was a believer. He always enjoyed singing hymns in church and meaningful sermons, both of which often brought him to tears. He was very tender hearted. Trey is survived by his loving wife of twelve years, Jean Tragesser Bohn, his children Blair (Preston) Waldo and Ashley (Josh) Roberson, both of Raleigh, NC and his step children, Kate (Zach) Perryman, Cary, NC, Kevin (Susan) Whitehurst, Williamsburg, VA and grandchildren Campbell, Levi, Abby, Price, Zachary, Wesley, Walker, & Whitney. He is also survived by his loving siblings, Cyntheal (Eddie) Fisher, Rocky Mount, VA and David (Ellen) Bohn, Forest, VA

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, “T” & Ray Bohn. Trey’s fun-loving personality, his beautiful smile and dedication to his family and friends will forever be cherished.
