Norris Calvin Lawing

Norris Calvin Lawing, 94, former resident of Dupont Drive, died Wednesday morning following a period of declining health. Born in Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Arthur John Lawing and Fanee Mae Robinson Lawing. Mr. Lawing moved to Durham as a young man and worked for several years with Wright Machinery. For the next 16 years, he was in commercial sales with Ingold Tire Company. In 1960, Norris and Percy Watkins opened the Fish House Restaurant on Hillsborough Road. He retired in 1986. Mr. Lawing was a member of the Eno Masonic Lodge # 210, A.F.A.M. and the Durham York Rites Bodies. He was a member of McMannen Uneed Methodist Church. Mr. Lawing will be remembered as a hard working man, a good provider and a man that loved his family. He and his wife sacrificed their retirement to rear twin grandsons. Surviving are his wife, Madge Johnston Lawing; his son, Michael Lawing of Durham; a daughter, Sandra Diane Lawing of St. Augustine, Fl.; six grandchildren, Frank Divallerino, Frederick Divallerino, Michael Lawing, Jr, Beth Lawing Bradford, Melody Cash and Jed Cash; four great-grandchildren, Frank Norris Divallerino, Daniel Bradford, Andy Bradford and Jeffery Michael Lawing. Mr. Lawing was cremated and no services are planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
