Durham, NC – Norman “Bryant” Walker, Jr., age 61, was surrounded by family as he passed away at Duke University Hospital on September 11, 2024. He was born on September 5, 1963, to Norman Bryant Walker and Kay Godwin Walker.
Bryant graduated from Southern High School in Durham and attended Durham Technical Community College, then began a lifelong career as a third-generation telecommunications specialist with GTE, Verizon Communications, and Frontier Communications. He was a member of Gorman Baptist Church. Bryant was an avid sports fan following Duke sports and the Atlanta Braves. He appreciated reading about and discussing history, especially focusing on WWII history and held a deep respect for those who served their country.
Bryant is survived by one son, Justin Bryant Walker; his mother, Kay Godwin Walker; a sister, Frances Walker Stuart (Chris McGee); a brother, Jim Walker (Shayna Cox); and a nephew, Samuel James Stuart (Haley). His family also includes Kimberly Walker and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Bryant was preceded in death by his father, Norman Bryant Walker, and his grandparents, James and Nellie Godwin and Bryant and Lyda Ruth Walker.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Gorman Baptist Church in Durham, NC. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM before the service.
The family would like to thank the Duke University Liver and Lung Transplant teams, especially the providers and staff of Duke University Hospital patient care units 3100, 7800, and MICU, who provided exceptional care and compassion to Bryant throughout his medical journey. In addition, the family is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of love, support, food, and prayers that have sustained them during this difficult time.
