Nina Woods Garriss, 85, of the Methodist Retirement Community, died Monday in Duke Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Garriss, a native of Orange County, was the daughter of the late Samuel Woods and Lonie Tilley Woods. She graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1938 and attended Crofts Secretarial and Accounting School. She was retired from the American Tobacco Co. accounting office after 36 years of service, and was an active member of Little River Presbyterian Church and most recently, Hillsborough Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Garriss was also a devoted voluneer for 18 years at Durham Regional Hospital. Surviving are her husband, Marcus A. Garriss, a nephew, Dr H. Roy Woods; great niece, Dr. Katherine Cook; great nephew, Dr. Vincent Woods; a sister-in-law, Phyllis Garriss; nephew, Daniel Garriss and wife, Sue; niece, Meredith Cooper, husband, Pell and daughter, Marelle; and niece, Margaret Garriss. Her sister, Miriam W. Martin, predeceased her. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Thursday from Hillsborough Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Brizendine officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsborough Towneemetery. Friends will be received in church one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hillsborough Presbyterian Church, 102 W. Tryon St. Hillsborough 27278 or to a charity of one's choice.
