Nina Rutledge Carroll

Nina, age 100, beloved wife and mother passed away peacefully at home in Durham on Saturday, November 13, 2021, while surrounded by her loving daughters.

Nina was born on May 19, 1921, to John Henry and Nina Sligh Rutledge in Durham, NC.

Nina graduated from Durham High School in 1939. She went on to study at Duke University and graduated with a BA in English. While at Duke, she was lucky enough to attend the only Rose Bowl game not played in Sacramento. After graduating she joined the American Tobacco Company Accounting Department where she worked until a few years after she married the love of her life, Adrian M. Carroll, in 1949. She was an active member of Duke Memorial Methodist Church and in the Church Circle and the Church Nursery. She loved gardening, Duke and Carolina Sports and spending time with her family. Nina was the light of so many lives. She touched so many people with her love.

Nina was predeceased by Adrian, her husband of 61 years, her brother, John “Nookie," his wife, Betsy and grand-niece, Amy.

She is survived by daughters, Adrianne, and Mary Carroll of Durham. She is also survived by her nieces, Betty McDermott (Mike) of Kansas City and Ann Broadway (Michael) of Pittsboro; her nephews, John Rutledge (June) of Harrisburg and Charles Carroll (Alice); as well as numerous grandnieces and nephews.

To her excellent Duke Hospice team and caregivers of Home Instead, thank you so very much for the love and comfort you provided Nina throughout her last months.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, between 4-6 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham, NC. A graveside will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2021, at 1:00 PM at Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, NC with Rev. Jennifer Abill officiating.

Nina loved flowers, or memorials can be made to the charity of your choice.
