Myrna Howerton Micol, age 73 of Durham, NC went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday morning, August 30, after a courageous battle with cancer. She died peacefully at her residence surrounded by her family. Mrs. Micol was born on April 8, 1938 in Hillsborough, NC to Mather Spencer Howerton and Lillian Wheeley Howerton. She was the 9th child of eleven children. She was preceded ineeath by her father, Mather Howerton; mother, Lillian Howerton; three sisters: Lillan Tyson, Carol Basile, and Doris Sykes; three brothers: James Howerton, Steve Howerton and Fred Howerton; and a grandson, Nicolas Micol. She is survived by her beloved husband, Giovanni Mike Micol; daughter, Kim Tucker of Lexington, NC; sons, John Micol and wife Lisa of Durham, NC, David Micol and wife Joyce of Adamstown, Maryland; Mark Micol and wife Lynn of Durham, NC; mother in law, Sadie Micol and a close family friend of 45 years, Jean McClain. Mrs. Micol's love for life was enhanced by her eleven grandchildren; Jon Tucker, Spencer and Kaitlyn Micol, Rachel, Kevin, Sarah and Will Micol, Alex and Cori Aldinger and Ben and Sam Micol. She is survived by two brothers, Thomas Howerton and Richard Howerton and wife Faye of Durham, NC; sisters, Nancy Dixon of Durham, NC and Lynda Kellis and husband Jerry of Cary, NC. She is survived by a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Micol graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1955 and married the love of her life, Giovanni Micol on June 5th of that same year. She performed oneelevision during it's infancy and was the featured singer know by the local viewers as the " Sweetheart of the Saturday Night Jamboree" with Woody Marshburn and The Wanderers of the Wasteland, which aired from 1951 to 1956 on WFMY Television Channel 2 in Greensboro, NC. Myrna beganeer family in 1956 and was later employed by Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1959. She found her job to be very rewarding and always enjoyed helping the many customers find "just the right outfit". Her specialty though was assisting geneemen who were looking for that "special gift" for their wife. On a few occassions she eveneersuaded the men to purchase a fur coat, which, of course, they had not intended to buy, making many ladies in Durham very happy. When she finally retired in 1993, after 34 years, she was managing fourteeneepartments in the apparel and fine jewelry areas. Ineer earlier years Myrna was very active aneenjoyed playing tennis, golf and fishing with her grandchildren and brothers. She loved flowers aneenjoyed flower gardening. She also enjoyed challenging her children and grandchildren to WII, Scrabble, Yachtzee and other board games. Her home always reflected love of the holiday seasons and celebrations with family members. Myrna was the perfect host. Guests were always welcome ineer home and neer left hungry. Family vacations were always enjoyed in the NC mountains where they would fish, hike, cook and play lots of games. Myrna will be remembered as a giving person, dear friend, loving and dedicated wife, mother with a big heart and genee spirit, grandmother full of fun and laughter, caring and loving aunt and a sister with a heart that made you feel like you were #1 and very special. She will be missed by everyone who knew her and loved her. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Duke Home Care & Hospice along with Aegis Home Care for the extraordinary care, comfort and respect they provided for Myrna and the family during her journey home. There will be a memorial service to celebrate Myrna's life 11:00 AM Friday, September 2, 2011at McMannen Uneed Methodist Church, 4102 Neal Road in Durham, NC 27705. One hour prior to the memorial service, the family will receive friends in the church. Immediately following the memorial service, a reception will be held in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials canee made to McMannen Uneed Methodist Church Building Fund at 4102 Neal Road in Durham, NC 27705 or Duke Home Care & Hospice at 4321 Medical Park Drive - Suite 101, Durham, NC 27704.
