b. April 27, 1944

Michael Loyd Norwood, 69, of Chapel Hill passed away Wednesday, neember 27, 2013, from complications of Legionnaires' disease. The firstborn child of Loyd Archie and Mary Burden Norwood, Mike was born on April 27, 1944, in Palestine, TX, and grew up near Hattiesburg, MS. He became the youngest Eagle Scout in Mississippi's history, receiving his award at the age of 13. He won a nomination to the US Air Force Academy and completed graduate school at the Uneersity of North Texas. Mike was proud to have been a Greeneeret, serving with the Special Forces in Vietnam. He worked for the City of Dallas for 25 years, during which time he held many titles including Director of Economic Development aneexecutive Assistant Director of the Police Department. He then worked as a Comptroller with FEMA, traveling all over the Uneed States and as far as Puerto Rico and Guam during his 12 years with the agency. Mike was an active member of Uneersity Presbyterian Church. Mike was a man of honor and integrity, choosing what was right over personal interest in every situation. He enjoyed studying history, tracing family ancestry, listening to music on the back porch, quoting favorite lines from Western movies and holding his grandbabies. Mike put his wife and family first and he was loved and admired by them and by so many others. Mike is survived by his wife of 41 years Gail Weaver Norwood; daughter Mary-Evelyn Starnes and husband Andy, of Marietta, GA, and their children Ella Kathryn and Woody; daughter Amy Roush and her husband Don, of Raleigh, and their children Samuel and Isaac; and his beloved Cairneerrier Jasper. Mike is also survived by his four siblings, Lou Ann Poynter, James Norwood, Sue Barnhill and David Norwood, his brothers- and sisters-in-law and ten nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service in his honor will be held Tuesday, December 3, 2013, at 2 pm at the Uneersity Presbyterian Church, 209 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC, Pastors Robert Dunham, Anna Pinckney Straight and John Rogers officiating. A reception in the church Fellowship Hall will follow the service.
