Metta Mae Metcalf

September 25, 1924 — July 27, 2022

Metta Mae Crumpacker Metcalf of Durham, NC, passed away on July 27, 2022 at Croasdaile Village just shy of her 98th birthday. She was born on September 25, 1924 to the late Beulah Staunton Crumpacker and William Johnson Crumpacker.

Metta graduated from Durham High School in 1942. She met Norman and they married in 1946 and she became a military wife. She went on to raise 2 sons and took care of the home. They lived in numerous states while Norman served in the army. North Carolina was the state she was the fondest of and the place she was the proudest to call home. Metta took pride in helping plan her high school reunion for many years and she enjoyed teaching Sunday school for 35 years at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church. Metta treasured being a grandmother and great grandmother. She was always so proud that she lived to see great grandchildren. She loved to travel and was blessed to be able see all 50 states as well as many places in Europe, Canada and numerous islands. Purple was her favorite color and violets were her favorite flower. She loved going to the Museum of Life and Science to visit the butterfly house. Morning walks, needlepoint, crocheting, reading, completing word searches, English tea, coffee and visiting Beech Mountain were some of her favorite things to enjoy. In her later years you could always find her working on a good puzzle at Croasdaile. She was an avid Duke basketball fan, although she enjoyed watching any sport on tv.

Metta Metcalf is survived by her grandson Kirk T. Metcalf Jr. and spouse Devon and their children Kam, Jacie and Mia. Grandson Jack E. Metcalf Jr. and spouse Shannon and their children Austin, Ethan and Lila. Grandsons Keny and Scott Metcalf and daughter-in-law Sandra Faye Metcalf. She was preceded in death by her husband Norman Metcalf, sons Jack Sr. and Kirk Sr. and granddaughter Melissa Metcalf and grandson Jimmy Metcalf.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Anna! Anna assisted Metta when her family was unable to be with her. She not only provided care for Metta, she was her friend and loved her. Also, they would like to thank the employees at Croasdaile Village that gave her such great care over the years.
