Merton Nugent, age 98, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 3, 2019. She was born Merton Harding Douglas to Marvin - Pearl Douglas in Victoria, VA. on December 26, 1920 She graduated from Victoria High School in 1938 and went on to earn a degree in nursing in 1942. Her nursing career brought her great joy throughout her life. In October of 1942 she married Robert Nugent. They had three children. Merton lived and worked and worshiped in Fredericksburg, VA, for many years. Later in life she lived part-time in Carthage, Texas, where her husband and son worked. There she enjoyed spending time with her in-laws, having her granddaughter to visit, and the occasional out of character fishing trip with her son. When her husband retired, they moved to Granville county to be near family. They attended Grassy Creek Baptist Church and never missed a Grassy Creek Christmas parade. She and her husband were active with the Gideons for many years. After the passing of her husband, Merton decided to move to The Village at Brookwood retirement community in Burlington, North Carolina. There she enjoyed working puzzles and playing games witha new circle of friends. Even as her health declined, she enjoyed frequent visits from her granddaughter and other family and friends. She was known and loved by so many. To some she was a cherished big sister, to others Aunt Merton. To her only grandchild she was Nana - and sometimes Nana-Banana. Her great-great-grandson called her GiGi. Friends often called her Mert. Wherever she was and by whatever name she was called, she was loved. Her smile was wonderful. Her laugh and playful nature were contagious. She knew how to be a lady and she knew how to have fun. She loved traveling, but ironically hated riding in the car. She loved to crochet. When her hands limited her to small projects, she made tiny caps for premature babies. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Robert, daughter, Livvy, and son, Fred. She is survived by granddaughter, Katie "Traveling Companion (Chris) Michelli; great-grandchildren, Michael, CJ (Ashley), Nicky, and Paul; great-great grandsons, Kaedyn and Lane; siblings, Jean Timberlake, and Walter (Sue) Douglas; sister-in-law, Eberline Nugent; nieces and nephew, Bonnie (Vann) Cutts, Paige Little, Michael (Margarita) Douglas, and Delaine Douglas; and Susan Lambert. Memorial service was held Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Gentry-Newell - Vaughan in Oxford, North Carolina. The family asks that all gifts be given by donating Bibles in her memory through Gideons International. Online memorials: www.HallWynne.com
