Maxine Clegg Gunter, age 83, of Pittsboro died Wednesday July 21, 2010 at her residence. Maxine was born neember 26, 1927 to Henry Grady and Pearle Batten Burns of Chatham County, NC. She was head-teller for many years and retired from First Citizens Bank. Mrs. Gunter loved flower gardening and Duke Blue Devils basketball. While a member of Chatham Uneed Methodist Church, Maxine served as treasurer. She was preceded ineeath by her first husband, William Atwater Clegg, Sr. in 1979, her son, William Atwater Clegg, Jr. in 1971, and second husband, Lee Gordon Gunter in 2009. Survivors include her daughter Kay Clegg Clawson and husband, Randall, and their children, Susan Lynn and Britany Renee Clawson, all of Marion, VA; step-son Doug Gunter and wife, Diane of Sanford, NC; step-daughter Martha Thompson and husband, Joe of North Wilkesboro; step-daughter Reba Thomas and husband, Ronald of Sanford, NC; 4 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Mary Stout of Sanford, NC; brother-in-law Lynn Clegg and wife, Rose of Moncure, NC; brother-in-law Bynum Clegg and wife, Juanita of Apex, NC; sister-in-law Mary Margaret Griffin and husband, Burnee of Pittsboro, NC; sister-in-law Becky Clegg of Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law Marie Johnson of Wilmington, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with the family Thursday from 6-8 pm at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home in Pittsboro. The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, at Chatham Uneed Methodist Church in Moncure with Rev. Patrick Sinclair and Rev. Ray Gooch officiating. Flowers are appreciated.
