Mary Oakes Gooch

Mary Oakes Gooch, age 87, died on June 6, 2023, surrounded by family in her home. She was born on June 23, 1935, to her late parents, Robert Oakes and Ruth Faucette Oakes of Granville County.

Visitation for family and friends is on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Gentry-Newell & Vaughan. The funeral services will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Highway 158, Oxford, NC, 27565 at 2:00 pm on Friday, June 9, 2023, and is officiated by Reverend Cameron Currin. Burial to follow in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, next to her late husband.

Mary was a woman of simple beauty and strength. She never met a stranger. She had the gift of gab making everyone she interacted with feel at ease. She lived by the golden rule of “if you did not have anything good to say do not say anything at all”. She would always come to the defense of family and friends and point out the good qualities in everyone.

Mary is survived by her children, Elmore D. Gooch, III and Chris N. Gooch (Kim); her beloved grandchildren, Conner, Lauren, and Kasey Gooch; and her sisters, Ruby Woodlief and Joyce Elliott. Mary will be missed by many extended family and friends too numerous to name.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Elmore D. Gooch, Jr and 5 of her siblings.
