Maria Longo Babes

Maria Longo Babes (89), beloved wife and mother, died peacefully on March 10, 2025, at Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC. She was born on December 17, 1935, to the late John and Mildred Longo of Jersey City, New Jersey.

Maria was known and admired for her unwavering love and dedication toward all of her family and friends. She was an avid Mahjong and Canasta player with her friends, and was an amazing cook. Her specialty was Sicilian dishes…especially her Sicilian pizza. Everyone loved her pizza!

She is survived by her beloved husband, Seymour Babes; her children, John Tallarido, Esq. (Christine); Donna Bindig (Charles); and stepdaughter Suzanne Troen (Dr. Bruce Troen); her devoted grandchildren, Dr. Brittany Anne Davidson (Kevin); Amanda Rooney, Esq. (Luke); Ben Troen, and Eli Troen. She is also survived by her loving brother, Charles Longo; sisters-in-law, Ann Marie Longo, and Joyce Longo; as well as 5 great-grandchildren: Caroline, 8; Kate, 7; Juliette, 6; Hazel, 4; and Bennett, 2.

Her nephews John, Anthony, Christopher, and Russell Longo; and nieces Denise, and Jennifer Longo (along with their families) were also an important part of Maria’s life.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mildred Longo, and brothers Russell Longo, and Salvatore Longo.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

A service honoring Maria’s life will be held on Saturday, March 22nd, at 3:00 pm, at Duke Chapel, 401 Chapel Drive, Durham, North Carolina 27708.
