Lloyd Humphrey

October 14, 1927 — January 7, 2023

Lloyd Humphrey, 95, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on January 7, 2023, at the Duke Hospice Hock Family Pavilion, after a long period of declining health.

Affectionately known as "Cotton" by his family, he was a quiet and kind man, a fixer who could repair anything and a fine gentleman who loved his family.

Born in Surveyor, WV, the son of Eva and Sam Humphrey, Lloyd graduated from Trap Hill High School in Surveyor and Beckley College in Beckley, WV. During World War II, Cotton served his country in the Merchant Marine. In 1946 he married Sarah Louise Corona with whom he enjoyed a long and loving marriage for 58 years.

Cotton’s professional career was as an electrical engineer. He was employed in that capacity for over four decades with AEP Appalachian Power Company in Beckley, retiring in 1990 as Director of its Electrical Engineering Department.

In 1990, Lloyd and Sarah moved to Durham in order to spend their retirement years near their daughter Lloydette Hoof and her family. In Durham they joined their daughter’s church, Trinity Avenue Presbyterian. Cotton was also active in the Durham Lions Club.

Lloyd is survived by his daughter, Lloydette Humphrey Hoof and her husband Bruce, his granddaughter Mary Lloyd Hoof Preble and her husband Kurt, his three great-grandchildren, Jack, Allison and Wright Preble, all of Durham; and his second wife, Eileen Bragg Worley Humphrey, her brother Glen Bragg of Summersville, WV (Mary), and her brother-in-law Tom Brannon of Louisville, KY; and by five nieces and nephews.

Lloyd will also be fondly remembered by friends who maintained relationships with him across time and miles including Albert Page, Gus Holshouser, David Ransom, Hank Bostic, Matthew Saunders, Charlie Richmond, Tom and Maryann Maloy, and Bill and Polly LeFevre.

Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Sarah, by his granddaughter Allison Elizabeth Hoof of Durham and by his brother Boyd Curtis Humphrey of Beckley.

The family extends sincere appreciation to the staffs of the Hospice of Durham, Duke Home Care and Hospital and Duke Hospice at the Hock Family Pavilion for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Durham Lions Club, 2924 Ericka Drive, Hillsborough, NC 27278.

In keeping with Mr. Humphrey's wishes, he will be inurned privately at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley next to his wife Sarah.
