Lawrence Carlton Moore , Jr.

April 6, 1939 — May 23, 2022

Lawrence Carlton Moore, Jr., age 83, died at Duke Hospital on May 23rd, 2022.

Lawrence, or “Lang” as he was mostly known, was born April 6th, 1939 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Willie Prince Moore and Lawrence Carlton Moore, Sr of Mississippi.  He had an older sister, the late Anne Burney.  The family moved to Charlotte, NC in 1951 where Lang met his wife, Guthrie “Dutton” Lemmond, at East Mecklenburg High School.  He received a B.S. in mathematics from North Carolina State University in 1961, studied in Germany after college, and then earned a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1966.  From there he joined the Duke University Mathematics Department where he pursued his interest in the application of nonstandard analysis to the theory of Banach spaces and in later years focused on improving the instruction of calculus.  Lang believed in making the concepts of calculus accessible through real-world problem solving, which led him to co-author the textbook Calculus: Modeling and Application with his colleague David Smith.  Lang was a visiting professor at Cal. Tech in 1973-74 and worked in East Berlin with Ward Henson in 1981.   For the 2001-02 academic year Lang took a sabbatical to work with the Mathematics Association of America; he continued to work with the MAA after his retirement from Duke in 2004.

Dutton and Lang were married in Matthews, NC in 1965 during a torrential downpour, and they spent most of their sunny 57 years of marriage in Durham. They built a wonderful life in the Watts-Hillandale Neighborhood, attended Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, and spent time at their cottage in Kure Beach, NC.  Lang
loved dogs (especially collies), running, listening to blues and classical music, and reading widely. He was adept at making waffles, pouring a beer with a proper head, and washing the dishes. He was always ready with a clever pun and to read aloud to his children and grandchildren.

Lang is survived by his wife, Dutton, their son, Lawrence Carlton Moore, III, his daughter-in-law Jennifer Straub Moore and their daughters Laurie Ellen and Alison Moore, as well as his daughter, Karen Moore Goldstein, his son-in-law Jeremy Hasher Goldstein and their daughters Lila, Naomi, and Vera Goldstein. Lang is survived by niece Susan Anne Burney and her husband Tim Ellis, nephew Michael Jackson Burney and wife Lisa, and great-nephews Carson Burney and wife Noel and daughter Charlie, Connor Burney, and Logan Burney and wife Maggie.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 1st at 11 am at the Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church in Durham.
