Colonel Kevin William McMahon, Retired US Army
The family of Colonel Kevin William McMahon, US Army, Retired, of Durham, NC is saddened to announce his passing on May 9, 2024.
Kevin is survived by his loving wife, Maria Drescher McMahon and brother-in-law Michael Drescher (Rina) of Columbia, SC, sister-in-law Sue McMahon of Bedford, NY, nieces and nephews TJ Drescher, Susie McMahon, Maureen McMahon (John), Sally Blanchette (Bruce), John McMahon (Angelica), Brien McMahon (Maria), Mary Stapleton (Lorin), Erin Daly (Bobby), Kathy Richardson (Scott), Deirdre Pascale (Peter), and Tricia Hinz (Eric).
Kevin was predeceased by his brothers Jack McMahon, Brien McMahon, and his nephew Sean McMahon.
Kevin was born on January 6, 1939, to Mary Burns McMahon and John Joseph McMahon in Port Chester, NY. Kevin grew up in Port Chester the youngest of 3 boys where he enjoyed playing sports, especially baseball. He attended Fordham University on an ROTC scholarship and earned a master’s degree in counseling from the University of South Carolina.
While a student at USC Kevin met the love of his life, Maria Drescher. They were married on March 11, 1967 in Columbia, SC at the Fort Jackson Chapel. They were assigned to duty stations across the US as Kevin served the U.S. Army and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. They made homes in Columbia, South Carolina, Texarkana, Texas, Petersburg, VA, Marianna, FL and Gaithersburg, MD before retirement allowed them to settle down in Durham, NC.
In retirement Kevin was an active parishioner of St. Matthew Catholic Community, the American Legion. He found joy in exercise and teaching fitness at Gerofit. He greatly loved West Highland terriers and regularly visited nursing homes with his trained therapy dog.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 10, 2024, at St. Matthew Catholic Community, 1001 Mason Road, Durham, with a viewing from 1:00 pm until the start of the funeral mass.
