(CARY) – Kai Wing Young, 90, passed away at the Duke Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, North Carolina on December 10, 2023. He was born on May 28, 1933 in the village of Taishan, China to the late Ging Sum Young and Suet Fong Young. After completing high school in Hong Kong, he emigrated to join his extended family in the Boston, MA area. Kai obtained his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completed a masters degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He spent his career as an engineer, initially at Union Carbide and moving with his division as it was sold to other companies. Kai was an active member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, serving the parish as a member of the Knights of Columbus and a eucharistic minister. Kai enjoyed playing mahjong with friends and family, gardening in his backyard, and traveling around the world. A lover of food, many of his activities would be accompanied by meals. On many a weekend you would find him having Dim Sum or out to dinner with friends and family.
Kai was preceded in death by his wife, Amelia Bensan Young.
Kai is survived by his loving wife, Kwai Chun Yung of Cary, North Carolina; sons, Vincent Young (Kelly Malloy) of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Timothy (Emily) Young of Durham, North Carolina; two step-sons, Wei Yan (Robin) Chan of Cary, North Carolina and Wei Lung (Thanh) Chan of Cary, North Carolina; and step-daughter, CC (Karim) Alwan of Northbrook, Illinois; grandsons, Christopher Young, Matthew Young, granddaughters, Taylor Young, Faith Young, step grandsons, Maxton Chan, Colston Chan, Kaiman Chan, step granddaughters, Alia Alwan, Manna Chan; brother Jeff Young; sister, Won Nora (Dennis) Yee; many nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.
Visitation will be at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham, North Carolina on Monday, December 18 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
A funeral mass will be at St. Thomas More in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on Tuesday, December 19 at 1:00 p.m. with burial immediately following at Markham Memorial Gardens in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
