Durham - Joseph Benjamin White passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024, at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, N.C., at the age of 72.Joseph, who often went by JB, was born in Daytona Beach, FL on January 19, 1952. He was one of four children born to the late Amos Benjamin White and Georgia Elizabeth “Betty” Hogan.
JB spent his early childhood growing up by the ocean where he enjoyed learning to fish and surf. In 1966 he moved to Estill, SC. As a teenager he learned to play guitar, which became a lifelong hobby. One of the first songs he learned to play was Sunshine, by Jonathan Edwards. JB joined the U.S. Navy in 1970 and completed active duty in 1974. During this time, he was stationed in San Francisco, Long Beach, San Diego, Waikiki, and Subic Bay. He especially enjoyed his time in Waikiki, spending his free time at the Jolly Roger Crow’s Nest, listening to the Blue Kangaroo band.
Following his service, JB relocated to Durham where he worked at the American Tobacco Company for several years until the company relocated. JB then followed in his father’s footsteps working in the construction industry as a painter and drywall mechanic. He was a master at his craft and took great pride in his work.
Throughout his life JB was known for his playful streak, which was often preceded by a mischievous smirk. Those who knew him well are certainly left with stories to tell. He was quick to help a stranger in the same way he would a friend. JB enjoyed hunting with various friends over the years. He loved to grill, often treating family and friends to steaks, wings, and ribs. When relaxing you would likely find him listening to music or watching a funny TV show.
JB was preceded in death by his stepfather William Hogan and his beloved bloodhound Jake.
JB is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Nancy Wetherington White; daughters, Shellie Stichman, Carrie Rodrigues, and Tracie White; grandchildren Tanner Stichman and Gavin Stichman; siblings Tom White, Nancy Norris, and Randy White; dogs Maggie, Cooper, and Buddy.
The family would like to extend our gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the staff, nurses, and doctors at Duke Hospice and Hock Family Pavilion.
