Joseph Goodwin Brown

September 20, 1943 — May 9, 2020

Joseph Goodwin Brown, 76 years, of Oxford, NC died Saturday, May 9, 2020 at his home surrounded by family. He was born in Greene County, Georgia on September 20, 1943 to Chalmers Lee Brown, Sr. and Alpha Brown Peppers.

Joe was a man of great determination who, despite a sometimes gruff exterior, loved his family fiercely and with his whole heart. He had a strong work ethic, could fix just about anything, and enjoyed exploring his creativity through woodworking. Joe loved to bestow his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with their own special nicknames and had a mischievous sense of humor. A perceptive observer, Joe often quietly solved problems for people in his family and his community through acts of kindness and generosity.

Joe is survived by his wife, Celia and his children, son Darryl Henderson (Dawn) of Oxford; son Jeremy Brown (Julie) of Holly Springs; son Jason Brown (Jenny) of Durham, and daughter Constance Jo Armstrong of Lubbock, TX; his grandchildren, Monique Henderson, Brandon Brown, Tyler Henderson, Madison Brown, Olivia Brown, and Matthew Brown; great-grandchildren, Dawson Patterson, Haley Patterson, Jayden Henderson, Brantley Brown, and Oakley Cameron Brown. He is also survived by his brothers, Clyde Brown of Siloam, GA,; Ottie Brown (Sue) of Madison, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Chalmers Lee Brown, Jr.; his sisters-in-law, Mary Brown and Jo Ellen Brown; and his grandson, Cameron Brown.

A private family celebration of Joe’s life is being planned in the coming months.
