Joseph Dalton Cox, Jr.

Joseph Dalton "Joe" Cox, Jr., 75, of Pittsboro, died December 20, 2007 at UNC Hospital. He was born March 30, 1932 in Guilford County, the son of Joseph D. Cox, Sr, and Helen Gibson Cox. Joe served in the US Navy during the Korean conflict. He was an active member of the community in Pittsboro, where he had served as Chief of the Fire Department, was a former President of the Kiwanis Club and also was in the Jaycees. He coached and umpired youth football and baseball in Chatham County for over 20 years, and was an avid deer hunter. Joe had served as a funeral director's assistant at Griffin Funeral Service since the late 1990's, and was a retired building supervisor at UNC @ CH after 14 years of service. Following his naval service, he worked as a butcher, and later worked for Webster Poultry. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Spivey Cox; son and daughter in law, Joey and Donna Cox of Garner; daughter and son in law, Darlene and MIke Ryan of Pittsboro; grandchildren, Dalton and Carly Cox, Christopher and Katherine Ryan; and two sisters, Helen Stewart of Lillington aneemma Allen of Smithfield. A granddaughter, Cassidy R. Cox, preceded him ineeath. The service will be conducted by Rev. Ray Gooch at 2:00 pm, Sunday, December 23, 2007, from the graveside at the Spivey Family Cemetery in the White Hill community of Lee County. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Saturday at Griffin Funeral Service.
