John Thomas Killough

November 25, 1951 — August 11, 2024

Durham, NC

John Thomas “Johnny” Killough, 72, died on August 11, 2024, at the Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, NC.

Johnny was born on November 25, 1951, at Watts Hospital in Durham to Hoyle Thomas Killough and Alta Franklin Killough. A graduate of Jordan High School, Johnny enjoyed playing football and teasing the woman who would later become his wife in 1997.

Johnny spent his career in auto mechanics and auto supplies. A devoted fan of NASCAR and auto racing, he often traveled to races or spent hours watching them on TV. If a race or his beloved Duke Blue Devils were on, it was best to leave him be. He also enjoyed visiting historical sites and museums with favorite destinations like Colonial Williamsburg, Biltmore and Winston-Salem. Johnny was a longtime Mason and a member of Fellowship Masonic Lodge #687 where he served two terms as Master. He was also a member of Yates Baptist Church for over 20 years.

Johnny was deeply involved in Alcoholics Anonymous, where he battled alcoholism throughout his life. During one 18-year period of sobriety, he especially distinguished himself by volunteering in the North Carolina prison system, advocating for and meeting with inmates seeking sobriety and stability.

Known for his playful, mischievous sense of humor, Johnny made a lasting impression on many. His presence and friendship will be missed by them. After a long season of declining health, his family is grateful that he is now healed and whole in God’s hands.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 27 years, Gail Killough, and four children: Robert Killough (Becky) with their children Cate and Christopher; John “JT” Killough, Jr. (Emma) with their children Layne, Haylee and Peyton; Brandy Lewis (Rodney) with their children Noah, Naomi, Naaman and Nolan; and William “Arthur” Killough (partner Michelle). He also leaves behind three stepchildren: Rosalie Edmonds; Brandon Edmonds (children Brandi Rose Edmonds, Clark and Violet Beckstrom); and Joy Penta (John). Johnny was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Dorothy Killough Wagstaff, and a granddaughter, Alexis Beckstrom.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 19th, 2024 at Yates Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the Growing God’s House Fund at Yates Baptist Church (2819 Chapel Hill Road, Durham, NC 27707) or online at yateschurch.org/ggh.
