John Broughton, Iii

(Cary, NC) – John Broughton III, age 84, died at his home in Cary, NC on December 7, 2023. Born on May 5, 1939, in Norfolk, VA, he was the son of the late John Broughton Jr. and Mattie Relfe Broughton.

John earned a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from NC State University, a Master’s degree from East Carolina University, and EdD from Oklahoma State University. He was a Professor of Mathematics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 1971 to 2000.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years Rebecca Wayne Broughton of Cary NC; his daughter Ellen Patterson and her husband Carl of Lake Worth, FL; his son Ed Broughton and his wife Rabia of Durham, NC; his sister Susan Winslow and her husband William of Hertford NC; and his grandchildren Claire, Emma, and Alex.

He proudly served in the US Army from 1962 to 1964.
