Joe Thurman Pickard, 95, of Hillsborough, NC passed away peacefully on March 26, 2013 surrounded by his loving and devoted family on his farm. Mr. Pickard was born in Durham County to the late James Ernest Pickard and Mae Johnson Pickard of Durham. He was preceded ineeath by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Cashwell Pickard; a daughter, Barbara Jo Pickard Pate, along with three brothers, Lewis Pickard, John Pickard and James Snooky Pickard. He is survived by a sister, Sue Pickard, and two brothers, Kenneth Pickard and Bill Pickard. Mr. Pickard is also survived by daughter Pamela Pickard Couch and her husband, Lea, four grandchildren who called him "Big Da" Leigh Ann Dobson Safrit, Andrienne Pate Parker, Susie Couch Snell and Brian Scott Pate; along with nee great-grandchildren, Trey Dobson, Jack Safrit, Jimmy Parker, Barbara Ann Whittfield, Jessica Parker, Bailey Snell, Ben Snell, Banks Snell and Campbell Pate. Mr. Pickard proudly served his country during World War II in the Uneed States Army in the Atlantic Wing of the Air Transport Command. After the war, Mr. Pickard began working in the family founded business; Pickard Roofing Company. He was instrumental in the operation of the company until his retirement in 1973. Mr. Pickard was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hillsborough where he was involved in so many aspects of the church for 41 years. Mr. Pickard liked to tinker around the farm and spend time with his family. The family would like to thank Dr. David Bright, his physician; and the caretakers who faithfully took care of Mr. Pickard; Kathy Gram, Marilyneeffers, Erica Smith, and Beth Rickman. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 Am Friday, March 29 from the Chapel of Hall Wynne Funeral Service, 1113 W. Main Street in Durham with close family friend, Rev. Amy Hardee presiding. Burial with military honors will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Friends may visit one hour prior to the service, from 10:00-11:00 am in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Hillsborough, 223 W.
