Joan Olsen Stallings, age 77, died at Heartland Hospice in Raleigh, NC on Sunday, September 19, 2021. She was born on January 17, 1944, to the late Lola Ledell Duncan Hall and Thomas Webb Schwenke.
Joan attended and graduated from Lincoln High school in Wisconsin in 1963. She enlisted in the armed forces and served in the Army between 1965 to 1966, where she met and married William C. Stallings in December of 1965. She received an honorable medical discharge for being pregnant and starting their family. She was then a housewife, mother and worked jobs outside of the home when able. As a family, they moved a lot due to her husband's military career. When the family moved to Durham, NC, she received her CNA certificate where she worked as a Nurse’s Aide at Methodist Retirement Home in Durham from 1980 to the early part of 1990s. Then, she worked as a nanny for a few years. She attended the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the south Durham area for a few years. In her free time, she enjoyed doing arts and crafts.
Joan is survived by her sons; William Stallings III (LaMonda) and Jeffrey Stallings; daughter, Deborah Scism (Brian); grandson, Taylor Scism and many aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Stallings, Jr.
The family has decided to forgo any service. Joan’s wishes were to be cremated and to have her ashes spread in her favorite place. A headstone will be placed at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC next to her husband’s burial plot.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, the Durham VA Home Healthcare or the Wounded Warrior foundation.
The Stallings family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
