In Memory Of
Jason Jute Epps
1988 - 2023
Jason Jute Epps, 34, tragically passed away as the result of a violent crime on January 31, 2023, in Durham. Jason was born on December 7, 1988, in Washington, DC, to the union of Robert Lee Epps and Serena Warner Epps. He moved with his family to Durham when he was 6 years old.
Jason was known among family and friends for his intelligence. He received the honor of acceptance of his application to attend Duke University following his graduation from Riverside High School in 2007. However, wishing to pursue a career in the arts, he opted instead to attend The Art Institute of Charlotte.
Jason's creativity and skills in the visual arts were evident during his high school years. His drawings and photography were recognized, and selections were published in the school newspaper. Following his studies, he worked as a photographer, barber and hair stylist. Jason was described as having a mind and an eye for details.
Jason's family will always remember his love of the Liberian cuisine he was raised on, especially his mother's cooking. His favorites included fufu, "GB" with pallava sauce, and palm butter with okra.
Perhaps the characteristic of Jason that stood out the most to others was his kindness. Jason was a loving and devoted son and brother. He arranged surprise events for family members on their birthdays, and was always there to lend a helping hand when needed. Friends and family described Jason as thoughtful, accepting and easy to get along with. He loved his dog, Pepper. He loved doing other activities with his family, like playing basketball in the driveway with his brother and Uncle Jaytoe.
Jason is survived by his mother Serena Warner Epps, stepfather Tommy D. Kwia, and brother Adam Dekontee Epps, of Durham; sister Saydenu Joy Amanda Tukan of Atlanta; cousin Ebony Epps of Bridgeport, Connecticut; aunts, uncles and additional cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Lee Epps.
