Jane Hammes Ryan

Jane Touhey Hammes Ryan, 85, died May 27, 2011. Born in Charleston, SC, on October 20, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Robert F. Touhey and Claire Lowman Touhey. Ms. Hammes graduated Summa Cum Laude from North Central Uneersity in Durham, NC receiving a BS ineealth Education. She later earned a Masters Degree in Counseling and Special Education for the emotionally disturbed. Ms. Hammes was retired from the North Carolina Division of Mental Health Developmental Disabilities. Prior to this she was a teacher, counselor and social worker, then Program Director for the North Carolina Division of Youth Services; youth counselor for South and North of Orange-Durham Employment and Training in Chapel Hill, NC; Board Member and past chair of Durham County Board of Elections, Feminist and Civil Rights activities; Founding Board of the North Carolina Trianee, Komen Race for the Cure and Board of Cornicopia and involved in church and community activities. After retiring, she worked part time for UNC Charlotte's Sociology-Anthropology Department doing research. She opened the Southern Sisters Book Store with Cookie Teer aneelizabeth Goode in the 1980s. Ms. Hammes was a member of the American Association for Counseling and Development, NC Society of Public Health Educators, NC Juvenee Services Association and Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. In 1965 she marched with Martin Luther King with huneeds of others from Montgomery, Alabama. She was a member of the Georgia League of Women Voters and Daughters of the Americaneevolution. Ms. Hammes is survived by four sons, R. Burke Hammes and wife Ruth Anne of Charleston, Robert T. Hammes and wife Nancy of Mount Pleasant, Michael Touhey of Charleston, and John M. Hammes of Raleigh, NC; three daughters, Marie H. Townsend and husband Thomas of Charleston, Louise V. Hammes of Charleston, and Anne Hammes-Brown and husband Mark of Mount Pleasant; twenty one grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be 11:30 AM Friday from Immaculate Conception Church in Durham
