James (Jim) Weldon Waller of Durham passed away on May 18, 2021 following complications from a fall. He was 98 years old.
Born in Granville County, North Carolina, on November 15, 1922, Jim was the son of Weldon Broughton and Lubie Neathery Waller. Following graduation from high school, he began working at Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company in Durham. Jim remained with the Liggett Group for his entire 53-year career in increasing roles of responsibility, ultimately becoming Vice President, Manufacturing.
Jim also served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1943-1946. He was an aerial engineer, attaining the rank of sergeant.
Jim is predeceased by his beloved wife of 64 years, Mildred (Tootsie) Blanchard Waller, and his brother William G. Waller. Survivors include a nephew, Mark Waller, and nieces Karen Waller, Susan Blanchard Speight, Mildred Blanchard Lash and Stephanie Blanchard Fisher.
Jim and his wife were devoted members of Trinity United Methodist Church, and a warm friend to his neighbors in Umstead Pines at Willowhaven.
The family will receive visitors at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service on Sunday, May 23, 2021, from 4 pm – 6 pm. A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, May 24, 2021 at 10 am at Maplewood Cemetery, Durham, NC and is open to all who wish to honor Jim.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Trinity United Methodist Church.
The Waller family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
