DURHAM-James Michael "Jim" Schmidt, 69, died Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at his residence. Born oneept. 24, 1943 in Louisville, KY he was the son of the late Albert Michael Schmidt and Helen Catherine Dieckman. Jim graduated from Trinity High School in Louisville, KY in 1961, and Bellarmine Uneersity, also in Louisville, in 1972. He continued his education at Duke Uneersity School of Medicine in the 8th class of the Physician Assistant Program graduating in 1974. He practiced as a certified Physician Assistant at Duke Uneersity Medical Center for 33 years, and retired in 2007. Jim had a lifelong love of botany and plant life aneenjoyed many hours in the yard at home. He was an avid reader, enjoyed photography and Duke Basketball. Jim is survived by his wife, Margaret C. Schmidt, his nieces, Laurie Ann Doyle, Lisa Marie Scheid, Jamie Michelle Valkovci, his nephew, Ronald Scott Smith all of Louisville, KY. He is also survived by his K-9 companion & friend, Sugar. He was preceded ineeath by his sister, Sharon Schmidt Smith. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11:00 AM Monday, March 18, 2013 from St. Matthew Catholic Church with Fr. Thanh N. Nguyen and Fr. Tom Tully presiding. Burial will follow with military honors in St. Matthew Catholic Cemetery. Friends may visit Sunday evening from 6:00-800 PM at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham.
