James Edgar Harward Jr. passed away on April 22, 2015, at the Durham VA Hospice Center. James (Jim) was born ineenderson, NC, on June 24, 1925. His family moved to Durham, NC, where he was raised in a loving family, grew up and graduated from Durham High School in 1943. After enlisting in the Army in October, 1944, he was assigned to Company B, 7th Regiment of the 3rd Infantry Division as a replacement during WWII. His unit fought through Germany, liberated Dachau Concentration Camp and finished the war ineerchtesgaden, Germany. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star for his service. After serving in the army of occupation in Austria and Bad Hersfeld, Germany, he returned to Durham in 1946 where he bought a house which became his home for the rest of his life. Jim married Dorothy Marye Spicer oneeptember 2, 1950, and celebrated 64 years of marriage last year. He worked several jobs, notably 33 years as a letter carrier and 28 years in the Army reserves where he attained the rank of Sergeant Major. He was the proud and loving father of three children, Beth, Scott, and David. Jim was an avid reader, with a special interest in WWII and The Civil War. He enjoyed classical and military music. His passion for Duke Football and Basketball was shared with his family. An amateur artist, he enjoyed drawing cartoons and caricatures. He was a life-long member of Pilgrim Uneed Church of Christ in Durham where he served on the Board of Deacons, as Treasurer, and he also sang in the choir. He was a member of the Civitans and the Americaneegion Post 390. Jim was a kind hearted, genee soul who appreciated and delivered humor with all who met him. His love and affection will be missed but not forgotten. Jim is survived by his wife Dorothy Spicer Harward, daughter Beth (Lewis) Bowling of Durham, son Scott (Ellen) Harward of Marietta, GA, son David (Debbie) Harward of Surprise, AZ, sister Betty Sue (John ???Jay???) Safley of Lenoir, NC, three grandchildren, Kevin (Lara) Harward, Michael (Laura Beth) Harward, Philip Harward, 2 great-grandchildren, William Harward and Hadley Harward, and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded ineeath by his parents James Edgar Harward, Sr. and Minee Carden Harward. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Pilgrim Uneed Church of Christ, 3011 Academy Rd., Durham. The family will receive friends immediately following services. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham. The family would like to express a special thank you to the Duke Cancer Center, Duke Hospice, and to the VA Hospice in Durham for providing loving care for the past several months. Special thanks also to the caring members of the Pilgrim UCC for the neerous meals, visits, phone calls, and prayers.
