James R. Dykes, MD

Durham, NC – James R. Dykes, MD, died unexpectedly yet peacefully in his home May 1, 2024. 

He was born on October 23, 1950 in Borger, Texas, to the late James and Virginia Dykes.

Jim earned diplomas from Duke University undergraduate and medical schools. After practicing family medicine in Roanoke Rapids, NC, and on Ocracoke Island, NC, he opened his private practice in Durham, where he was a solo family physician for 21 years. 

After retiring, Jim built his dream home in the Potluck Farm Community north of Durham, where he resided for the remainder of his life. Every day he enjoyed caring for his farm animals, walking on the wooded trails, Tai Chi, and reading. 

Jim is survived by his wife, Cathy, their daughter, Lia and his brothers Bob, Tom and Bill. 

The Dykes family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. 

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that anyone wishing to honor Jim’s memory walk in the woods or on the beach and wish him peace. 

A Celebration of Life will be held June 30, 2024 at 3:00 PM at the Carriage House, 3110 Jones Ferry Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.
