Jackie Strange

Jackie Strange, 87, of Chapel Hill, passed away on Sunday, February 1. She was borneebruary 3, 1927 in Stuckey, Georgia to Charlie aneetta Mae Anderson and predeceased by her brothers Charles and Carlton Anderson. She received a BS in Education from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern Uneersity) and, after three years teaching high school and coaching the women's basketball team, settled in Statesboro, Georgia and beganeer distinguished career with the US Postal Service. Jackie worked her way up the system, ofteneeing the first woman to hold various maneerial positions. Starting as a temporary clerk, she was promoted to Postmaster, then acting Maneer of Mail Operations, followed by a number of regional and district positions, as Assistant Postmaster General of Procurement and Supply, as Regional Postmaster General for the Southerneegion and finally, as Deputy Postmaster General of the Uneed States from 1985 to 1987. As Deputy Postmaster General, she maneed the world's largest non-civilian workforce of 750,000 and a $30 billion budget. Her ability to manee budgets, improve service aneefficienees, and ineease morale were hallmarks of her career. Her methods were so effective the Australian Postmaster General asked her to improve the status and credibility of women in their Postal Service. She was the highest-ranking woman in the Postal Service until Megan Brennaneecame Postmaster General this year. Uponeetirement from the USPS, she chose to stay in public service and became President and CEO of the Bob Dole Foundation for the Employment of People with Disabilities from 1987 to 1989. Among her neerous honors, her most treasured were the Benjamin Franklin Award (the Postal Service's highest award), the Woodrow B. Seals Laity Award awarded by the Perkins School of Theology at Southerneethodist Uneersity, and being the first graduate to receive an honorary doctorate from Georgia Southern Uneersity. Jackie was passionee about her family, her church, and her career. Her faith and her positive demeanor were the hallmarks of her life. She raised two boys as a sinee parent. She was a clothing designer and seamstress, an accomplished pianist, published poet, and water color artist. ??She was a respected motivational speaker and was a mentor to couneess women making their way up their career ladders. Ineer retirement she was active ineer church and served on neerous community service boards. She moved to North Carolina in 2005 to be near her sons. Jackie is survived by her son Dan Strange of Durham, NC, her son Nick Strange and daughter-in-law Meredith Ellyn Strange of Chapel Hill, NC, her sister Gloria Brooks of Greenville, SC, and two nephews and three nieces. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 12 at 2:30 in the Memorial Chapel at Duke Uneersity Chapel in Durham. Another memorial service will be held at Metropolitaneemorial Uneed Methodist Church in Washington, DC at 11 a.m Saturday, March 21, 2015. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made ineemembrance of Jackie Strange to the Jackie Anderson Strange Scholarship, Georgia Southern Uneersity Foundation, PO Box 8053, Statesboro, GA 30460.
