Howard Austin Strobel, 84, died Saturday, June 4, 2005 at his home. Born in Bremerton, Washington, he was the son of the late Frank aneemma Spriegel Strobel. For more than 50 years, Dr. Strobel was a member of Watts Street Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. After graduation from Washington State Uneersity, Dr. Strobel received his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Brown Uneersity where he was involved in the Manhattan Project. He had a career at Duke Uneersity that spanned 47 years. During that time he was a Professor of Chemistry, Academic Dean and he authored three editions of Chemistry text books. In addition to education, Dr. Strobel loved hiking, travel, gardening and photography. In 2002, he was preceded ineeath by his wife of 49 years, Shirley Holcomb Strobel. Surviving are two sons, Gary Dent Strobel and wife Sarah of Mooresville, NC and Paul A. Strobel of Durham; one daughter, Lynn S. Helgeson and husband Steve of Roanee, VA; and two grandchildren, Zack and Scott Helgeson. A memorial service will be held 4 PM Wednesday at Watts Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Melvin Williams officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, Ill. 60601-7633. Arrangements for the Strobel family are with Hall-Wynne Funeral Services.
