Helen Vassiliades Leontis, 90, died Wednesday, October 17. She was born August 2, 1928 ineew York City to the late George and Vassiliki (Livas) Vassiliades. Helen moved to Durham with her parents in the early 1940???s. She graduated from Durham High School and worked her entire career as an administrative assistant with the City of Durham. Over many years, Helen took classes at UNC-Chapel Hill, and after retirement, obtained her B.A. degree ineeography. Helen had a curious mind with an affinity for the arts, history and all things cultural. She was a devotee of opera and classical music and was a special fan and supporting member of WCPE radio. Helen loved to travel and visit with family and friends. Her favorite hobby was the daily crossword puzzle, and she savored the Sunday New York Times. Helen had a deep love for her Greek Orthodox faith and was a devoted member of St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, where her parents were founding members. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her daughter, Helen Cleo Leontis. Surviving are her cousins, Sula Thomas, Elaini Livas Bingham, Katherine Livas, Janetis Vassiliades, Manuel Capsalis, Kathryn Saterson and their families; and her goddaughter, Kathy Meadows. Helen is also survived by many cousins in Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday from St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. Burial will follow in Woodlawneemetery. Friends may visit 6-8 PM Thursday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, with the Trisagion litany said at 7:00 PM. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Barbara???s Church Building Fund, 8306 Hwy 751, Durham 27713 or to WCPE, PO Box 828, Wake Forest, NC 27588. Helen???s family expresses deep appreciation to the staff of Carillon Assisted Living for their exceptional care the last 2 years.
