Hazel B. Saunders

Hazel B. Saunders, age 93, passed away at Duke Hospital, Durham, NC on October 1, 2010. Hazel was born in Madison, Georgia and after high school graduation came to Waynesville on a family vacation and fell in love with the mountains and decided to live there. She went to work at Belk and was attending Allen's Creek Baptist Church. A young man from the church started dropping in at Belk to talk to her. This started a life time love betweeneer and Frank. They started dating in May and got married August 2, 1942. They resided in Hazelwood for 64 years and moved to live with their daughter in Durham for the last 4 years. Hazel and Frank shared a wonderful life together for 68 years. Hazel was preceded ineeath by her parents, John and Bertha Shepherd Burchfield, her brother Boyd Burchfield, sister Ellen Nastav and great grandson Micah Green. Hazel is survived by her husband Frank. Her son Wayne and his wife Sara Lee of Clermont, Florida and her daughter Lois Ann and her husband Lawrence Green of Durham, NC. grandchildren, Bryan Green Julie of Rocky Mt., NC, Alan Green Donna of Wake Forest, NC, Joseph Saunders of Clermont, Florida and Katy Saunders Chris, finance of Clermont, Florida. Her great-grandchildren Landon, Cassidy, Seth and Luke Green. Her sisters, Frances Colquitt of Waynesville and Christine Bates, of Macon, Georgia, several special nieces and nephews. Her jewel over the past several months has been Brenda Harvin who has assisted in the care of her love; Frank. The funeral will be at Hazelwood Baptist at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5 and visitation from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Local arrangements are under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service, Durham. Garrett Funerals and Cremations of Waynesville, is assisting the Saunders family.
