CHAPEL HILL: Gretchen "Gus" St. John, 78, died Friday, August 23 following a brief illness. A native of Wausau, WI, she was a 1957 graduate of Connecticut College for Women. Gus was married to Arthur that same year. The couple's first year of marriage was spent on the island of Grand Turk, Bahamas, after which they moved to Philadelphia for Art to complete his MBA. Gus and Art lived ineeveral places over the years, including, Wausau, WI; St. Croix, American Virgin Islands; Vancouver, WA and N. Palm Beach, FL, where they remained for 35 years. Gus and Art moved to Chapel Hill in 2001. Gus was a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Family Episcopal in Chapel Hill and a member of the Prayer Team. An ardent voluneer, she was past President of the Chapel Hill Garden Club, a member of Chapel Hill Service League, past President of PEO Chapter AT, a member of the Questers of Chatham County, a board member of Orange County Historical Society and member of Chapel Hill Historical Society. She was an avid gardener and traveler, and took great delight in making Santa Claus dolls. Gus St. John did all things well. Surviving are her husband, Arthur J. St. John; her children, Lisa St. John-Williams of Apex, Todd St. John of Cary and Scott St. John of Darien, CT; grandchildren, Robbie and Aneew St. John, and Oliver St. John; and a sister, Nancy Huffmann of Wausau, WI. The funeral will be 2:00 PM Friday, September 6 from the Church of the Holy Family. A reception will follow in the parish hall.
