Gloria Ganzon Marsosudiro, of Hillsborough NC, died peacefully at home on
July 1, 2021. She is survived by her husband, Soeharjo; their son, Philindo; her
siblings Luzviminda, Monty, and Virginia (with husband Rick); and numerous
beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
She will be missed by many, including hundreds of friends, churchmates, and
fellow patrons of the Passmore Senior Center in Hillsborough.
Born in the Philippines, Gloria came to the United States in 1962. While she
was a graduate student at the University of Kentucky, she met and then (in
1966) married Harjo, a native of Indonesia. In 1967, she gave birth to their
son, who they named "Philindo" in honor of their home countries. She became
a US citizen; and for almost 40 years she served as a public school English
teacher and guidance counselor to students in Ohio, Tennessee, and North
Carolina. In an impromptu retirement speech, she told her middle school
students, “be good to each other. Be good to yourselves. God loves you.”
Gloria was a lifelong Roman Catholic whose dedication to God was marked
through prayer and through service to others. Along with Harjo, she was a
longtime member of the group Couples for Christ whose members treated her
as a special, respected elder. For many years, she attended Mass each day in
May for the Flores of Mayo adoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Her faith was
unwavering. Her love for others was unconditional.
Gloria was known for her charisma, determination, and sense of adventure.
Her humor -- sometimes childlike and sometimes sharp -- launched family
and friends into loud, unending laughter. When she set her mind on a goal --
whether a family project or charitable fundraiser -- she was unstoppable. And
no matter her age, she was always ready to try something new -- like moving
to the United States as a young, single woman; or playing badminton at the
NC Senior Games.
While a list of Gloria’s accomplishments and charms would fill volumes, she
will be remembered best for her faith and her love. In her last months, shewould still make the Sign of the Cross whenever someone prayed with her;
and she never stopped holding hands with her husband and son. They have
faith she is now in Heaven, blessing us all from above.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 11 (6pm to 8pm) at the Hall-Wynne
Funeral Home in Durham, with brief Vigil Prayers at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will
be held on Monday, July 12 (noon) at Holy Family Catholic Church in
Hillsborough, followed by the Rite of Committal at St. Matthew Catholic
Cemetery in Durham. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to an
organization Gloria greatly enjoyed: the Friends of the Jerry M. Passmore
Senior Center, PO Box 8181, Hillsborough NC 27278.
